Suction Aspiration: You will be placed on your back with your feet in stirrups. The abortionist will apply a shot of anesthetic to your cervix to reduce pain. The muscles of your cervix will be stretched by the introduction of progressively larger cone-shaped rods to dilate your cervix to allow the abortion tools to pass into your uterus. A suction canula will be guided into your uterus. When turned on you will feel the force of a strong vacuum used to pull the placenta and growing baby into small enough pieces to pass through the suction tube.
Dilation and Curettage (D&C): Preparation is the same as for suction aspiration but instead of inserting a suction canula, the abortionist will insert a loop-shaped knife that will be used to scrape the wall of your uterus and cut the developing baby into smaller pieces which are then pulled out of your body through the cervix. General anesthesia is usually required. The risk of your uterus being perforated, infection and bleeding is higher with this procedure than it is with suction aspiration.
