• If you looked for this website because you’re pregnant, or think you might be, you have an eight times greater chance of contracting a sexually transmitted disease when you have sex than you do of getting pregnant. • Don’t make the mistake of thinking oral sex is safe. You can get most of these diseases by having oral sex too. • In 1997 the Centers for Disease Control reported that of the 10 most common reportable diseases, 5 of them were sexually transmitted. Those 5 diseases, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, AIDS, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B accounted for 87% of all reportable infections. • That scenario has not gotten better. Each year 12 million Americans are newly infected. An article in the New England Journal of Medicine estimates that 1 out of every 5 Americans over the age of 12 (58 million Americans) has a sexually transmitted disease that is incurable. It is believed 1 in 4 Americans over the age of 12 has a STD that they do not know they have. One teen contracts an STD every 11 seconds. • A 15-year-old girl has a one in eight chance of having PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) just by having sex. • Contraception i.e. The pill, Depo-provera, the patch etc... offer no protection against STD’s. Condoms fail at preventing pregnancy 10 to 36% of the time. They fail even more often at preventing STD’s. Studies have shown they offer virtually no protection against HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) or Chlamydia two of the fastest growing STD’s. For more information on STD’s click below. more on stds.
